The People's Choice Award

The National Stamp Dealers Association (NSDA) sponsors the "People's Choice Award" for any stamp club promoted shows. In order for the venue to be ellegable for this award 50% of the dealers set up at the show MUST be NSDA members.  If your show qualifies, please contact Dick Keiser at nsda@dickkeiser.com

In Memory ... NSDA Members who have passed away

John Van Alystyne, from Sacramento passed away on June 23, 2009. He lost his battle with lung cancer. Our condolences to Sherry Strale and John's Daughter on our loss of a good friend.

Barry Savedow, the founder of Brouse House in FL. Passed away after a long illness. His son, Randy, one of our members survives him and continues the business witch he has been running for some time now. Many of us knew Barry, who spent over 50 years working in and for philately and dealers. He was, for many years, president of FSDA in FL. Our Condolences to Randy and Barry's family.

Randy Stehle passed away suddenly on May 15, 2009 in San Mateo, CA.

Phil Hodges passed in his sleep on Feb. 22, 2009. He will be missed by his friends in Philately

Saturday, Jan. 23, 2009 While attending a show in California, one of our most active dealers in the Southern California Club Shows from the dealer and promoter side of the business, Ray Clary suffered a heart attack at the show. Suffering 2 more within the hour, his life was ended. He was a friend to all who knew him. His quote to others always was "If you need a friend or help, I'm available”

 

Peter Adamini passed away July 6 at home. He and I were friends and business associates for more than fifteen years. He started as a collector, as virutally all of us did, and decided to become a dealer. He did it right. He found out what people wanted, didn't deal in poor quality material, supplied stamps that were salable and developed many long-term customers. He constantly expanded his operation by working painfully long hours. I would come into the office at 10 am or noon and he would be here, often since 6 am. I would leave in the early evening and Pete would usually still be working. He covered several states doing almost every show he could get into and occasionally booked three, four or even five weekends in a row. He also pushed out material on ebay constantly. We had a very convenient business relationship. He rented space from me in my office and we kept entirely separate books for our businesses. Pete purchased the foreign stamps that walked in, I took the US and auction consignments. Of course we pursued other collections offered to us directly but virtually never stepped on each others' toes. Pete had worked as a teacher in Michigan for many years, primarily involved in high school theatre; then as a salesman; then as a stamp dealer. One of his sons is a collector (though not of stamps), his other son and daughter are not. His only grandson collects rocks, stamps and loads of other things. No one in his family, that I am aware of, is or was as intense as Pete in collecting 'stuff.' Given more time I believe his intensity in business would have enabled him to move ahead more quickly and profitably in philately; his biggest impediment was the unfortunate limitation of 24 hours in any given day. Here is Pete on receipt of my biggest philatelic purchase about three years ago. (Yes, it is all sold now; he got a big portion of it) We shared a love of most kinds of music; playing poker; telling jokes; needling and then helping each other on internet problems; talking about our respective families; both happily remembering and at the same time being glad we were done with teaching school. We also got along well not discussing politics if possible as we were pretty much polar opposites. If you never met him perhaps you spoke with him on the phone, even if he just handed it over to me. Did he sound gruff or unfriendly? Well, he was at times but like all big, gruff guys he was soft on the important things in life. We had a great run and it won't be matched.

Charles Edward Poetzl: Charlie was Born on Sept. 27, 1927 IN San Francisco, Calif. He served in the Merchant Marine and the US Navy during WW II and for a short time after the war. He returned to Calif., got married and moved to Seattle for 4 yrs. He moved back to California for the rest of his life, living for about 25 yrs. in Fremont Calif. He moved to the Sacramento area with his wife of 53 yrs. about 5 years ago. He became a full time stamp dealer in 1985 specializing in British Commonwealth Stamps. Charlie was a Charter Member of the NSDA. He was an active dealer until a few months before his death on November 14, 2006 He is survived by two daughters and a grandson.
